The government has the right to issue taxes, including specific extras (like social security tax). The government has the right (and routinely does) offer tax breaks to anyone who makes certain private purchases (like buying Turbo Tax, among many examples). From a legal standpoint, it's the same thing, just a different rhetoric.
Also, the Supremacy clause and Commerce clause easily allow the Federal government to regulate health-care. Especially if they are opening it up for purchase across state lines. Then it is pretty much directly out of the commerce clause.

Pissing off the Supreme Court & human nature being what it is, I'd say their is a better chance of it now being found unconstitutional. In the future Obama, if you are going to bad mouth someone, you might want to make sure they don't have the power to ruin your parade.

In fact, the people who wrote the bill were aware of that fact when they wrote it... so they included wording like "if parts of the bill are declared unconstitutional it doesn't negate other parts."

Article 2, section 8 says nothing about the power to make you buy from private companies...period.
